Study region: Continental region of Colombia
Study focus: During the last years, the surface water supply has been threatened by the high pressures caused by the loss of forest cover due to the transformations in the natural landscape in the hydrographic basins for the development of socioeconomic activities. Therefore, this research addresses an analysis between the relationships of the geomorphometric variables and the forest cover in different hydrographic basins associated with the areas related to the IDEAM hydrological stations (n = 104) in the continental region of Colombia, in order to of evaluating the impacts of these variables on the probabilistic characterization for the annual estimate of surface water supply.
New hydrological knowledge: this research indicates that there is a relationship between the variables associated with the relief of the hydrographic basins and the forest cover, while the variables associated with the shape of the basins present a relationship with the flow values, additionally the results suggest that if there is a positive correlation between the annual flow values with the forest percentages for the same years, indicating that forest ecosystems play a positive role in the conservation of water resources in Colombia.
