Transformations in Contemporary Migrations in Mexico (2000-2019). An Approach to Violence and to the Process of Application for Asylum

dc.description	This article documents the impact of sustained violence against Mexican, Colombian, Venezuelan and Central American citizens in their migration processes, and highlights the degree of voluntariness or involuntary nature of these acts of violence. Based on literary review, semi-structured interviews, participant observation and the analysis of official databases, we study the transformation of contemporary migrations in and through Mexico (2000-2019) from three aspects: 1) the evolution of Mexico-United States migration policy; 2) the impact of violence on migrants (typical of the contexts of origin, transit and destination); and 3) the increase in refugee applications that makes of Mexico a destination country and not just a transit country (with all the observations and enormous challenges that this transformation implies). The study concludes that the trigger for migrant caravans is the violence in the country of origin. This forced displacement functions as a defense strategy against human rights violations, both by organized crime and by the immigration authorities. Under this context, the response to asylum demands in Mexico has been insufficient.	en-US
dc.description	Este artículo documenta el impacto de la violencia sostenida hacia los ciudadanos mexicanos, colombianos, venezolanos y centroamericanos en sus procesos migratorios, destacando el grado de voluntariedad o involuntariedad de estos. A partir de una búsqueda bibliográfica, hemerográfica, entrevistas semiestructuradas, observación participante y revisión de bases de datos oficiales se analiza la transformación de las migraciones contemporáneas en México (2000-2019) a partir de tres aspectos: 1) la evolución de la política migratoria México-Estados Unidos; 2) el impacto de las violencias en la población migrante —propias de los contextos de origen, tránsito y destino—; y 3) el incremento de las solicitudes de refugio que convierten a México en un país de destino y ya no solo de tránsito —con todas las implicaciones, observaciones y retos que implica esta transformación—. Se concluye que el detonante de las caravanas migrantes es la violencia en el país de origen y que funcionan como estrategia de defensa ante las violaciones de derechos humanos, tanto del crimen organizado como de las autoridades migratorias; además, que la respuesta a las demandas de asilo en México ha sido insuficiente.	es-ES
