| dc.description | This articles studies and describes the changes in the local party system of Medellín since 1988. To this effect, it analyzes three dimensions centered on the concept of institutionalization —system fragmentation, intra-party fragmentation and electoral volatility— by using quantitative indicators for these and other aspects of the local party and electoral systems. The study finds that there is a change from an institutionalized two-party system in 1988-1994 to a less institutionalized multiparty system after the 2011 elections. These findings contradict other studies on the national party systems and the standard institutional explanation by showing that transformations in the local sphere do not correspond to the changes in the electoral system nationwide. These results invite us to rethink the conclusions reached by this approach and highlight the importance of subnational comparisons. | en-US |
| dc.description | Este artículo estudia y describe los cambios en el sistema de partidos local de la ciudad de Medellín a partir de 1988, analizando tres dimensiones centradas en el concepto de institucionalización a partir del uso de indicadores cuantitativos, y otros aspectos de los sistemas de partidos y electoral local. El artículo encuentra que en el Concejo de Medellín hubo un cambio de un sistema bipartidista institucionalizado en 1988-1994 a uno multipartidista y menos institucionalizado después de las elecciones de 2011. Estos hallazgos contrastan con estudios sobre el sistema de partidos nacional, pues los cambios en el plano local no corresponden a los del sistema electoral y la interpretación estándar institucional. Esto invita a repensar las conclusiones de este enfoque y resalta la importancia de la comparación subnacional. | es-ES |
