dc.description	This article addresses the question of the role of sovereignty in the era of governmentality, posed by Foucault in his “Class of February 1, 1978”. It is argued that the answer to this question can be found, paradoxically, where the French author refused to search: in the writings of Machiavelli. The article offers a reconstruction of Foucault´s reading of Machiavelli´s The Prince focusing on his take on sovereignty and statecraft. From an ethical-political and hermeneutical approach, the article aims to outline the shortcomings of Foucault´s interpretation, arguing that a direct reading of Machiavelli would have allowed him a more expedite arrival at the kind of political historicism that questioned contract and liberal theories of sovereignty.	en-US
dc.description	Este artículo aborda la pregunta sobre el fundamento y el papel de la soberanía en la era de la gubernamentalidad, formulada por Foucault en su “Clase del 1 de febrero de 1978”. Se sostiene que la respuesta a esta pregunta puede encontrarse, paradójicamente, donde el autor francés se negó a encontrarla: en Maquiavelo. Para esto se hace una reconstrucción de la lectura que elaboró Michel Foucault sobre El Príncipe de Maquiavelo, precisando sus tesis y argumentos centrales sobre la soberanía y el arte de gobernar y, a partir de un enfoque ético-político y hermenéutico, se muestran los problemas de la interpretación de Foucault sobre El Príncipe, indicando que a partir de una lectura directa de Maquiavelo, él hubiese podido llegar más rápidamente a un tipo de historicismo político que pusiera en jaque la teoría de la soberanía elaborada por los teóricos del contrato y del liberalismo.	es-ES
