In this paper a brief description of the functions of the patient and the therapist in the constitution of the therapeutic relationship or therapeutic alliance is made. At first the high degree of responsibility of the therapist for being a professional isexposed; subsequently a contrast between the conceptions that have some authors who study clinical psychology in terms of the therapeutic relationship is; some emphasize the role of the therapist, others do it in the function of the patient and others tryto locate features on the therapist and the patient on the same level of importance.En este trabajo se hace una breve descripción sobre las funciones del paciente y del terapeuta en la constitución de la relación terapéutica o alianza terapéutica. En un primer momento se expone el alto grado de responsabilidad que tiene el terapeuta por su condición de profesional; posteriormente se hace un contraste entre las concepciones que tienen algunos autores que estudian la psicología clínica en cuanto a la relación terapéutica; algunos enfatizan en la función del terapeuta, otros lo hacen en la función del paciente y otros tratan de ubicar las funciones del terapeuta y del paciente en un mismo nivel de importancia.
