Adaptive behavior, in spite of being one of the diagnostic criteria of intellectual disability, is little or not at all disseminated in school environments, despite the fact that the content of the concept, which includes skills for daily living, is recognizable in various areas of the ordinary curriculum and in the usual work of teachers. This exploratory research aimed gathering empirical data for approaching the understanding and teaching of adaptive behavior by teachers. For that, three convenience samples of pupils and teachers’ schoolchildren with intellectual disabilities in the Maule Region (Chile) were employed. In the first one (n=359), the Diagnostic Adaptive Behavior Scale-DABS was administered to pupils to create a list of representative items of the construct to be used with the other two samples. With the second sample (n=76), we explored the teachers’ views of the importance of every item through a ranking questionnaire derived of the previous list. In a third step, with another sample of teachers (n=17), we conducted semi-structured interviews, focused on their knowledge of adaptive behavior, their pedagogical practices in this field and their assessment of the national curricular proposals on this matter. Among the main findings. the teachers gave high relevance to adaptive behavior, in its three dimensions, practical conceptual and social -specially this one-, for strengthening independent behavior and participation of schoolchildren with intellectual disability. Most of them addressed the lack of precise guidelines into preschool and primary curriculum and a more intense family cooperation in teaching adaptive skills.La conducta adaptativa, siendo uno de los criterios de diagnóstico de la discapacidad intelectual, es un concepto poco o nada difundido en el ámbito escolar, a pesar de que su contenido, que incluye habilidades para la vida diaria, es reconocible en diversas áreas del currículo ordinario y en el trabajo habitual del profesorado. Este estudio exploratorio tuvo como objetivo reunir datos empíricos, tanto sobre la comprensión de la conducta adaptativa como su enseñanza por parte del profesorado. Para ello se emplearon tres muestras de conveniencia de escolares y profesorado de alumnado con discapacidad intelectual de la Región del Maule (Chile). La primera de ellas, de escolares (n=359) sirvió para elaborar un listado lo más representativo posible de ítems del constructo, después de aplicarles la Escala de Diagnóstico de Conducta Adaptativa (DABS). Una segunda muestra de profesores (n=76), permitió explorar la importancia en su práctica docente de las habilidades adaptativas del listado anterior. En un tercer momento, se llevaron a cabo entrevistas semiestructuradas con otra muestra de profesores (n=17), focalizadas en su conocimiento de la conducta adaptativa, sus prácticas pedagógicas en este terreno y su valoración sobre las propuestas curriculares chilenas sobre este particular. Entre los principales hallazgos se encuentran la importancia que otorgó el profesorado a la conducta adaptativa práctica, conceptual y social -sobre todo esta última-, para fortalecer el comportamiento independiente y la participación del alumnado con discapacidad intelectual, aunque en sus prácticas pedagógicas no dispongan de orientaciones precisas dentro del currículo ordinario de educación parvularia y básica y sería precisa una mayor colaboración con las familias en la enseñanza de las habilidades adaptativas.
