dc.description | Abstract: This article holds that even if it is true that we need to reform institutional schemes that worked when the population was mainly young —which implies increasing both the age of retirement and the contributions of workers and employers to retirement funds, and to aspire to universal protection through fiscal channels— the aging of the population cannot be used as an excuse to privatize Social Security. In the light of recent experiences, reforms to the pension system must be reviewed, since everything seems to indicate that, as has happened in other privatizing actions, the beneficiaries from this will be a few financial groups, and in the future the State will have to face the demands of an aging population that won’t be able to get a pension, big enough to survive with dignity.
