Este artículo revisa algunos de los principales efectos disruptivos que a nivel individual y social provoca el desempleo. Los temas abordados son la incidencia del desempleo sobre el bienestar subjetivo, el suicidio, la mortalidad, la violencia, la emigración y el capital humano. El documento concluye que las implicaciones psicosociales
del desempleo deben considerarse al momento del diseño de las políticas públicas y que el desempleo debe ocupar un lugar preponderante dentro de la agenda de los gobiernos, la cual debe tomar en cuenta no sólo sus aspectos económicos.
Abstract: This article reviews some of the most disruptive effects of unemployment at the individual and social level. The issues dealt with include the influence of unemployment on subjective well-being,
suicide, mortality, violence, emigration and human capital. The article concludes that the psychosocial implications of unemployment should be taken into account in policy design and that unemployment should occupy a prominent position on governments'agendas, which should not only take its economic aspects into account.
