In this article, by the means of the documentary series Public Gardens and Afforestation, both available at Rio de Janeiro General Archives, I seek to understand how the state organized the natural environment at the urban space, between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in Rio de Janeiro. The assorted social perceptions of trees over the period will be a relevant point, as evidenced in the hygienic design and urban occupation of the state, as well as the population's resistance to the restriction of public space and their defense of other ways of relating to the natural environment.
