This research aimed to understand the family decision process for organ donation for transplants in the state of Ceará .The objective of this research was to understand the process of family decision on organ donation from potential donorfor transplantation in the state of Ceará. From this perspective, we tried to verify the donation/transplantation process introduced in the Transplantation Center of the State of Ceará; evaluate the understanding of families interviewed on the process of organ donation for transplantation and recognize the perception of families of potential donors interviewed about the desire to donate or not the organs of their family member to be transplanted, and acknowledge the reasons for refusal of organ donation for transplantation. This is an exploratory-descriptive and theoretical study, based on a literature research on authors who address this subject and on field research involving the families of potential donors of organs for transplantation. We also performed a documentary research in the Transplant Center of the State of Ceará and in the National Transplant System, aiming to know facts and figures for transplants performed during the eight years of the newtransplant system in Brazil, searching for information in documents, proceedings, regulations, circulars, letters, memoranda, balance sheets, and other informal communications.Este estudo trata da Decisão Familiar frente a Doação de Órgãos para transplantes, no Estado do Ceará. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi Compreender o processo de decisão familiar na doação de órgãos do potencial doador para transplante noEstado do Ceará. Nessa perspectiva, procurou-se verificar o processo doação/transplante implantado na Central de Transplantes do Ceará; avaliar o entendimento das famílias entrevistadas sobre o processo de doação de órgãos para transplante; conhecer a percepção de familiares de potenciais doadores entrevistados sobre o desejo de doar, ou não, os órgãos de seu familiar para serem transplantados e conhecer os motivos de recusa da doação de órgãos para transplante. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório e teórico-descritivo, alicerçado em pesquisa bibliográfica em autores que tratam deste tema e em pesquisa de campo envolvendo as famílias de potenciais doadores de órgãos para transplante. Realizou-se, ainda, uma pesquisa documental, na Central de Transplante Estadual e no Sistema Nacional de Transplantes, objetivando conhecer fatos e números referentes a transplantes realizados nos oito anos de existência do novo sistema de transplante no Brasil, buscando-se informações em documentos, anais, regulamentos, circulares, ofícios, memorandos, balancetes, comunicações informais e outros.
