dc.description	In this text, I examine the activities of General Maurice Gustave Gamelin, the leader of the French military mission contracted by the Brazilian governmentto modernize the army. Little known or even unknown in the specialist iterature, Gamelin was active bet een 1919 and 1924, guiding the most radical transformation ever undertaken by this institution in the whole of its existence. Based, above all, on the available documentation in the French Army’s Historical Service, I investigate the personality, motivations and modus operandi of the French general. My objective is to contribute to the study of Brazilian military modernization. Moreover, this study can offerrudiments for understanding the greatpowers’ involvement in Latin Americanin between the two world wars.	en-US
dc.description	Neste texto, estudo a atuação do general Maurice Gustave Gamelin, o principal chefe da Missão Militar Francesa contratada pelo governo brasileiro para modernizar o Exército. Pouco ou nada lembrado pela literatura especializada, Gamelin atuou entre 1919 e 1924 orientando a mais radical mudança experimentada por esta instituição em toda sua existência. Baseado, sobretudo, na documentação disponível no Serviço Histórico do Exército francês, investigo a personalidade, as motivações e o modo de agir do general francês. A pretensão deste trabalho é a de contribuir para o estudo da modernidade militar no Brasil. Entretanto, ele oferece elementos para compreender a atuação das grandes potências na América Latina entre as duas guerras mundiais.	pt-BR
