dc.description	Between 1990 and 2004, Jean-Bertrand Aristide ruled Haiti in three different periods, in a situation of permanent political instability led by military coups and popular mobilizations. Aristide emerged as a national leader from the action of popular Catholic-based movements that gained strength in the final crisis of the dictatorship of Jean-Claude Duvalier (1957 - 1986). Most studies on the country's recent history have focused on characterizing that violence and the structural political crisis of the Haitian state would be the basis of this situation. However, to seek explanatory hypotheses for this period, little is considered about the institutional continuities that have been preserved on the one hand and, on the other, the external economic and political pressures and interests on the country. We seek to problematize these hypotheses, considering the existing historiographical and theoretical debate and the documentary sources, in view of the contradictions and possibilities that were opened to the Aristide governments.	en-US
dc.description	Entre 1990 y 2004, Jean-Bertrand Aristide gobernó Haití en tres períodos diferentes, en una situación de permanente inestabilidad política liderada por golpes militares y movilizaciones populares. Aristide surgió como líder nacional de la acción de movimientos populares de base católica que cobraron fuerza en la crisis final de la dictadura de Jean-Claude Duvalier (1957 - 1986). La mayoría de los estudios sobre la historia reciente del país se han centrado en caracterizar la violencia y la crisis política estructural en el estado haitiano como base de esta situación. Sin embargo, para buscar hipótesis explicativas para este período, poco se considera sobre las continuidades institucionales que se preservaron por un lado y, por el otro, las presiones e intereses económicos y políticos externos sobre el país. Buscamos problematizar estas hipótesis, considerando el debate historiográfico y teórico existente y las fuentes documentales, ante las contradicciones y posibilidades que se abrieron a los gobiernos de Aristide.	es-ES
dc.description	Entre 1990 e 2004 Jean-Bertrand Aristide governou em três períodos distintos o Haiti, numa situação de permanente instabilidade política protagonizada por golpes militares e mobilizações populares. Aristide emergiu como líder nacional a partir da ação de movimentos populares de base católica que ganharam força na crise final da ditadura de Jean-Claude Duvalier (1957 - 1986). A maior parte dos estudos sobre a história recente do país tem-se concentrado em caracterizar que a violência e a crise política estrutural do estado haitiano seriam base dessa situação. Porém, para se buscar hipóteses explicativas desse período pouco se abordam as continuidades institucionais que foram preservadas de um lado e, de outro, as pressões e interesses econômicos e políticos externos sobre o país. Buscamos problematizar essas hipóteses, considerando o debate historiográfico e teórico existente e as fontes documentais, frente às contradições e possibilidades que se abriram aos governos Aristide.	pt-BR
