In this article, we analyze the ways in which children are referred to in the writings on indigenous peoples of the Argentine Chaco by military, religious, officials and early ethnographers between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, in the context of the advance of capitalism and the consolidation of the nation-state. Taking into account the discourses about the impact of adults on the ways in which children are conceptualized, and vice versa, we will reflect on the articulation between the images of childhood within the peoples of the Chaco and the meanings present in the discourses on indigenous adults – conceived as ‘children’ from the hegemonic configuration of citizenship. We build a  corpus of sources from which we will point out coincidences, counterpoints and interrelations within the different social fields that were being consolidated in this period, a time when childhood was also beginning to become an object of public debate in the country.En el artículo analizamos los modos en que los/as niños/as son referidos/as en los escritos sobre pueblos indígenas del Chaco argentino realizados por militares, religiosos, funcionarios y primeros etnógrafos entre fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX, en el marco del avance del capitalismo y la consolidación del Estado-Nación. Teniendo en cuenta que los discursos sobre los adultos/as de un determinado grupo impactan en cómo los/as niños/as son conceptualizados/as, y viceversa, reflexionaremos sobre la articulación entre las imágenes respecto de la niñez en los pueblos del Chaco y las tramas de significación presentes en los discursos acerca de los adultos/as indígenas –concebidos como ‘niños’ desde la configuración hegemónica de ciudadanía–. Construimos un corpus de fuentes con el que señalaremos coincidencias, contrapuntos y  entrelazamientos en los distintos campos sociales que se consolidaban en el período, al tiempo en que también la infancia comenzaba a constituirse como objeto de debate público en el país.
