dc.description	This article deals with the study of a unique case of language reversal in the Andean domain: the revitalization of Chipaya, the last surviving dialect of the (formerly) vastly extended Uro language family, once spoken on the Peruvian-Bolivian highland plateau but now confined to the salt flats of Oruro (Bolivia). Its irrecoverable extinction was presaged by the ethnographers working in the third decade of the past century in view of the supposedly wholesale Aimarization of its speakers, as had happened to its congeneric dialects. Yet Chipaya has succeeded in reverting this prediction, thanks to the cultural and ethnic reinvention of its speakers, who turned it from a marginal and underestimated language into a powerful instrument of strong ethnic identity. Various factors have contributed to this unique case of self-promoted language and culture reversal, among them the development of social and historical consciousness and intellectualization of its leaders, aspect which are analyzed within this study. Among the Andean societies, whose native tongues are in serious danger of disappearing in the face of the Spanish language, the language loyalty demonstrated by the Chipaya people is simply unusual, if not amazing.	en-US
dc.description	Este artículo versa sobre un caso único de reversión idiomática en el mundo andino: la revitalización del chipaya, hablado en las estepas de Oruro (Bolivia), el último dialecto sobreviviente de la familia lingüística uro, originariamente de vasta difusión en el altiplano peruano-boliviano. Vaticinada su irremediable extinción por los etnógrafos de la década del 30 del siglo pasado, por la creciente aimarización de sus hablantes, como había ocurrido con sus dialectos congéneres vecinos, el chipaya ha logrado, gracias a la reinvención étnico-cultural de sus hablantes, revertir su condición de lengua marginada en vías de extinción en poderoso instrumento de reivindicación étnica. Varios son los factores que contribuyeron a este singular proceso de reversión lingüístico-cultural gestado por sus propios hablantes, entre ellos el desarrollo de la consciencia histórica y social y la intelectualización de sus dirigentes, aspectos que son analizados en el presente estudio. En el contexto de las sociedades andinas, en el que las lenguas originarias mayores se ven amenazadas de extinción por parte del castellano, asombra el caso del chipaya y su lealtad idiomática puesta a prueba por parte de sus hablantes.	es-ES
