dc.description	Traditionally, historical and anthropological research has understood the colonial and postcolonial society of the Yucatan peninsula as divided into two clearly defined groups – colonizers and colonized, Spaniards or vecinos and Maya Indians – with more or less separate social and political spheres. The tendency persevered, even gaining momentum during the caste war era, which, among other things, saw the emergence of autonomous political units among the insurgents. This contribution argues, however, that this image of Yucatecan society is based on misconceptions and fails to recognize the nature and functioning of ethnicity in colonial and postcolonial Yucatan. It is shown that in many instances political communication and social ties followed more vertical than horizontal logics in tune with paternalistic and factionalist rather than ethnic or class dynamics. The borders between the rebels, described as ‘barbarous Indians’, and the rest of Yucatan society were, even during the caste war, less impervious than has been assumed and did not strictly adhere to ethnic divisions.	en-US
dc.description	Tradicionalmente la investigación histórica y antropológica ha entendido la sociedad colonial y poscolonial de la península de Yucatán como dividida en dos grupos bien definidos –colonizadores y colonizados, españoles o vecinos e indígenas mayas– con esferas sociales y políticas más o menos separadas. Tal tendencia se ha continuado y aún fortalecido con respecto a la época de la guerra de castas caracterizado, entre otros, por la emergencia de unidades políticas autónomas de los sublevados. El artículo argumenta, en cambio, que esta imagen de la sociedad yucateca parte de nociones equivocadas y entiende mal el carácter y el funcionamiento de la etnicidad en el Yucatán colonial y poscolonial. Se muestra, entre otros, que la comunicación política y los lazos sociales seguían, en muchos casos, más una lógica vertical que horizontal correspondiendo a dinámicas paternalistas y faccionalistas en vez de étnicas o de clase. Incluso durante la guerra de castas las fronteras entre los rebeldes descritos como 'indios bárbaros' y el resto de la sociedad yucateca eran menos impermeables que se supone y no correspondían estrictamente a divisiones étnicas.	es-ES
