| dc.description | This article analyzes the contradictory uses of the concept of citizenship in the governmental practice of Rafael Correa’s party Alianza País (AP). Correa’s AP is a self-described leftist movement that promised a “Citizen’s Revolution”. Yet in power Correa restricted the institutional foundations that allow for citizens to articulate their autonomous demands. His administration repressed and coopted social movements, and other organizations of civil society. I argue that AP self-conception as a movement that promised to found from scratch all institutions of society explains their contradictory appropriation of the concept of citizenship. Instead of delivering a citizen’s revolution, they created a plebiscitary democracy under Correa’s leadership with the support of a strong state. | en-US |
| dc.description | Este artículo analiza la contradictoria apropiación del concepto de ciudadanía en la práctica del gobierno de Alianza País (AP) bajo el liderazgo de Rafael Correa en Ecuador. AP se autodefine como un movimiento de izquierda que prometió llevar adelante una “revolución ciudadana”. Sin embargo, desde el poder Correa restringió los espacios institucionales donde los movimientos sociales y organizaciones de la sociedad civil podían articular de modo autónomo sus demandas y derechos. El argumento que desarrolla el artículo es que al concebirse Alianza País como un movimiento refundacional hizo una apropiación contradictoria del concepto de ciudadanía. En lugar de promover una revolución ciudadana, creó una democracia plebiscitaria bajo el liderazgo de Correa con el soporte de un Estado fuerte. | es-ES |
