| dc.description | Forensic psychologists perform scientific psychological evaluations to answer one or many specific questions for the justice system. Psychological forensic evaluations can be framed as a small-scale scientific investigation (Espinosa, 2015), framed in mixed methods designs. This, because it makes use of both quantitative and qualitative tools in the evaluation process. However, if it is stated that a mixed methods process is carried out, it is pertinent to clarify the specific research design used. The objective of this text is to highlight how the psychological forensic evaluation would correspond to a convergent parallel design of the mixed methods. For this, its epistemic support is presented from critical realism and the elements that make up the proposed design. Critical realism has been one of the most important epistemological paradigms in the fundament of combined investigation methods. This approach comes from Roy Bhaskar who built it as an alternative to positivism and hermeneutics (Parada, 2004). The convergent parallel design is a design of mixed research methods which includes the concurrent implementation of quantitative and qualitative tools, seeking to answer the same question. It is also shown how these are evidenced in a psychological forensic evaluation in its quantitative approach with psychometric instruments and qualitative elements with interviews and categorical analysis, and in the integral analysis of the information in the discussion and conclusions. | dc.description | Los psicólogos forenses realizan evaluaciones psicológicas de orden científico, con el fin de ayudar a responder una pregunta de la administración de justicia. Las evaluaciones psicológicas forenses, se pueden enmarcar como un proceso de investigación científica a pequeña escala enmarcado en los métodos mixtos de investigación. Esto, debido a que hace uso tanto de herramientas cuantitativa como cualitativas en el proceso de evaluación. No obstante, si se afirma que se realiza un proceso de los métodos mixtos es pertinente aclarar el diseño de investigación utilizado. El objetivo del presente texto es resaltar como la evaluación psicológica forense correspondería a un diseño paralelo convergente de los métodos mixtos de evaluación. Para ello, se presenta su soporte epistémico desde el realismo crítico y los elementos que componen al diseño propuesto. El realismo crítico ha sido uno de los paradigmas epistemológicos más importantes en la fundamentación de los métodos mixtos de investigación. Este enfoque proviene de Roy Bhaskar, quien lo construyó como una alternativa al positivismo y la hermenéutica. El diseño paralelo convergente corresponde a la implementación concurrente de herramientas cuantitativas y cualitativas, buscando responder una misma pregunta. Se muestra cómo estos se evidencian en una evaluación psicológica forense en sus elementos cuantitativos como los instrumentos psicométricos, cualitativos como las entrevistas o análisis categorial, y finalmente en el análisis integral de la información en la discusión y conclusiones.
