| dc.description | Modern societies are currently facing new challenges arising from the global phenomenon known as “fake news”. This article presents the results of a case study conducted in a Portuguese public higher education institution that involved communication students and whose main objective was to understand the students' perception of fake news and online misinformation. Data were collected using an online questionnaire and a focus group. The sample included 49 students who were attending the second year of the Communication course in 2018/2019 and 8 other students were selected to be part of a focus group. The results obtained showed that students are aware of the existence of fake news and of what they are and that they understand the reasons why individuals make up and share false information. The answers show that most of the manipulated news they have found come from social networks and that the participants trust the information they get from television, print publications and radio. The current research concluded that the students are well aware that fake news are a growing problem that takes different forms and state that education is the best way to prevent people from being manipulated by fake news. | en-US |
| dc.description | Las sociedades contemporáneas enfrentan nuevos desafíos decurrentes del fenómeno globalizado de las fake news. Este artículo presenta los resultados de un estudio de caso realizado en una institución portuguesa de educación superior pública y su objetivo principal es comprender la percepción que tienen los/as estudiantes sobre noticias falsas y desinformación en línea. Se recogieron los datos usando un cuestionario en línea y un grupo focal. La muestra comprendía un total de 49 estudiantes de segundo año del curso de comunicación en 2018/2019 y 8 participaron en el grupo focal. Los resultados obtenidos resaltan que los/as estudiantes entienden lo que son las fake news y se dan cuenta de los motivos por los cuales se inventa y comparte información falsa. Las respuestas recogidas muestran que la mayoría de las noticias manipuladas tienen su origen en las redes sociales y que los y las participantes confían en la información que obtienen a través de la televisión, de la prensa y de la radio. La investigación concluyó que los/as estudiantes son conscientes que las fake news son un problema creciente que puede adoptar distintas variantes e indican que la educación es la mejor forma de luchar contra el poder de manipulación de ese tipo de noticias. | es-ES |
