The present research analyzes from a political point of view the role played by the public opinion that was raised at the local, regional and national press, during the process of creating the national intendance of San Andres and Providencia from 1912 through 1915. The public confrontation arising between Cartagena’s conservative elite and the emerging political class of the archipelago is then presented, with the first ones supporting the maintenance of the current conditions that had permitted them to keep the political and administrative control of the islands, and the second ones claiming the creation of a new legislation leading to a more autonomous frame so they could be able to manage the affairs of the archipelago by themselves. This confrontation was staged at the press, with the islanders focused in developing a public opinion thatguaranteed the permeation of the inner circles of central government in such a way that they finally could get its favor above the interests of Cartagena. Finally, the paper registers the way in which they achieved the new political and administrative condition as a national intendance linking them directly to the central government instead of the regional Bolivar department to which they were previously attached.
