| dc.description | Neoliberal policies have brought about poverty, migration, and agrarian land individualization. The objective of this paper was to analyze the process of land sales in four of the six “ejidos” or communal land in Atenco, State of Mexico. It focuses on the adoption of full private property and women’s exercise of the right of first buyer. The paper’s originality lies not only in the gender analysis of land privatization, but also in the fact that research was conducted in a municipality well known for the defense of its territory. Data were obtained by means of three methods: communal land (ejido) archival research; participant observation, as well as group and individual interviews. Two patterns of full private-property adoption and the exercise of the right of first buyer were identified. In the first pattern, transactions were individual (parcel by parcel), while in the second, land sales were operated in groups. In both cases, authorities failed to protect women’s rights as first buyers. The women themselves also lacked information on how to defend the family’s patrimony. | en-US |
| dc.description | Las políticas neoliberales han generado pobreza, migración e individualización de la propiedad agraria. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el proceso de venta de tierras en cuatro de los seis ejidos que conforman al municipio de Atenco, Estado de México, poniendo particular énfasis en la adopción de dominio pleno y en el ejercicio del derecho del tanto por parte de las mujeres. La originalidad del artículo reside no solo en analizar la privatización de la tierra desde el enfoque de género, sino también en hacerlo en un municipio conocido históricamente por la defensa del territorio. Los datos fueron obtenidos a través de tres métodos: análisis de documentos ejidales, observación participante, y entrevistas grupales e individuales. Se identificaron dos patrones en la adopción del dominio pleno y en el ejercicio del derecho del tanto. En el primero, las transacciones se realizaron de manera individual (parcela por parcela), mientras que en el segundo las ventas fueron grupales. En ambos casos, las autoridades no protegieron los derechos de las mujeres y ellas tampoco los hicieron valer debido a su falta de información sobre cómo defender el patrimonio familiar. | es-ES |
