| dc.description | El Código Negro de 1789 fue un aliciente para que los esclavos reclamaran ante la justicia real mejores condiciones de vida y trabajo. Este artículo resalta la necesidad de repensar los planteamientos de la historiografía acerca de que la desaparición de la esclavitud en las regiones cañeras de Nueva España fue provocado por factores demográficos y económicos que la volvieron insostenible. Nuevas evidencias demuestran que el Código Negro puso al descubierto fuertes tensiones que definieron la liberación de esclavos a fines del periodo colonial en zonas azucareras, como Xalapa, donde este sistema de explotación se creía prácticamente extinto. Black Slaves from the Subdelegation of Xalapa in the Face of the Black Code of 1789: Insubordination, Justice, and ReprimandSlaves saw the Black Code of 1789 as an opening to appeal to crown courts for improvements in their living and working conditions. This article highlights the need to rethink the common assertion in the historiography that slavery’s disappearance from the sugar regions of New Spain was caused by economic and demographic factors that rendered it unsustainable. New evidence demonstrates that the Black Code uncovered powerful tensions that explain the liberation of slaves at the end of the colonial period in sugar production areas, like Xalapa, where this exploitative labor system was believed to have become practically extinct. | es-ES |
