dc.description	A pesar del reducido número de sus frailes y de su precaria situación económica, los conventos hospitales tenían un papel importante en la atención hospitalaria de las urbes de la provincia de Veracruz. En 1820, las órdenes fueron suprimidas, empero, las autoridades civiles se esforzaron en conservar los hospitales, colocándolos bajo sus respectivas esferas, municipal en 1820 y estatal a partir de 1824. Los propios religiosos, conscientes de su frágil posición, trataron de entregar los hospitales y exclaustrarse. Algunos de ellos habrían de entablar posteriormente relaciones con los políticos radicales. La llegada al poder de éstos últimos en 1833 parecía marcar el final de la historia de los conventos hospitales. Sin embargo, gracias al apoyo de la élite local, el convento hospital de Orizaba se restableció en 1834, mostrando así los límites de la secularización en una sociedad tradicional.Secularisation or Continuity: Hospital Convents and Hospitable Friars in Veracruz, 1820-1834In spite of there being few friars and their difficult economical situation, hospital convents had an important position in the health attention of the cities of the province of Veracruz. In 1820, the orders were suppressed, but civil authorities made an effort to preserve the hospitals, took them under their own wings: the municipal sphere in 1820 and that of the State after 1824. The friars, conscious of their weak position, tried to deliver the hospitals and to secularise themselves. Some of them were involved in relations with radical politicians. Their arrival to power in 1833, would be the end of the history of the hospital convents. However, thanks to the support of the local elite, the hospital convent of Orizaba was reestablished in 1834, as evidence of the limits of secularisation in a traditional society.	es-ES
