dc.description	A través de la reconstrucción de la polémica generada por la negativa de Clemente de Jesús Munguía a prestar el juramento civil para recibir la posesión del obispado de Michoacán, el 6 de enero de 1851, el artículo analiza las posturas del obispo electo, del gobierno federal y particularmente de la prensa en torno a la posición de la Iglesia ante el Estado y el papel del clero en la sociedad. Se subraya la importancia de la prensa como medio de formación e información de la opinión pública de la época, y se argumenta que la negativa de Munguía hizo que la relación entre Iglesia, Estado y sociedad se volviera central en el debate público, coadyuvando a profundizar la polarización política a través de la opinión pública. Al mismo tiempo, muestra que estas diferencias encontraron soluciones negociadas gracias a un consenso de los actores políticos: la necesidad de una relación armónica entre ambas potestades.Freedom of Conscience or Political Partisanship? The Polemic surrounding Bishop Clemente de Jesús Munguía’s Civic Oath, 1851Reconstructing the discussion that arose as a result of Clemente de Jesús Munguía refusal to swear the civic oath in order to be consecrated bishop of Michoacán, this paper analyses the polemic between Munguía himself, the federal government and the press about Church-State relations and the position of clergymen in society in 1851. This study underlines the importance of the press in public opinion, and it argues that Munguía’s decision focused the political debate on the relationship between Church, State and society. As a result this case increased the political polarization of Mexican society in the middle of the 19th century. Finally, this paper shows how the opposing positions on this debate were buried temporarily in order to maintain a consensus in the Mexican civil society: the harmonic relation between Church and State.	es-ES
