| dc.description | El presente artículo examina algunos de los cambios que en materia de higiene se hicieron a principios del siglo XIX en la villa de Xalapa. Prácticas hasta entonces toleradas, como la presencia de cementerios, muladares, hospitales o carnicerías, en el centro de la población, empezaron a ser criticadas. Los cambios en las nociones de higiene, que establecían una relación entre la salud de las personas y el ambiente en que vivían, ocasionaron una resignificación del espacio público. Para ese momento, la higiene se volvió una forma de medir lo moderno y civilizado en contraposición de lo sucio y antisocial. Por esa razón, mantener limpias las calles y evitar toda materia descompuesta en ellas se volvió una preocupación constante para las élites políticas a fin de salvaguardar a la población.Xalapa and her Miasmas. Hygiene and Public Space, 1794-1833The article you are about to read examines some of the changes in hygiene experienced at the very beginning of the nineteenth century in Xalapa. For the first time, reformers criticized some of the common practices of the time, such as permitting the existence of Graveyards, dumps, hospitals and slaughterhouses in the middle of the town. The change of thought about hygiene, establishing a connection between people’s health and the environment they lived in, produced a transformation in the meaning of the public space. Hygiene became a way to measure “modernity and civilization” as opposed to “dirtiness” now identified as antisocial and backward. Having clean streets and the removal of every single rotting trash from public spaces became a constant concern of political elites who now sought to protect local inhabitants of this provincial city. | es-ES |
