Between 1869 and 1880 more than sixty writings on the acclimatization of eucalyptus in the Valley of Mexico were published in the press. A sample of these writings are the basis for understanding the purpose to acclimate the species by scientists from Mexico City through the press. The social history of science analyzes that such purposes were grouped into categories such as the therapeutic value of the species, the tendency to plant trees to improve urban hygiene, tested for eucalyptus had useful manufactures artisans and promote industrialization, and planting and beautification of public spaces of the city. The analysis of the sample reveals several practices, interests and objectives of amateur and professional naturalists on the process of acclimatization of foreign species to strengthen the Mexican economy.Entre 1869 y 1880 se publicaron en la prensa local más de sesenta escritos referentes a la aclimatación del eucalipto en el Valle de México. Estos constituyen actualmente la base para comprender la intención de los hombres de ciencia tras su pretensión de implementar esta especie vegetal en la Ciudad de México. En ese sentido la historia social de la ciencia ha permitido identificar algunos de sus criterios: el valor terapéutico atribuido al eucalipto; la tendencia a plantar árboles para mejorar la higiene urbana; la utilidad de dicho árbol en las manufacturas de los artesanos y en la industrialización; y su siembra como ornato de los espacios públicos de la urbe. El presente análisis busca por tanto revelar las prácticas, intereses y finalidades de los naturalistas amateurs y profesionales en torno al proceso de aclimatación de especies extranjeras para reforzar los ramos económicos del país.
