dc.description The objective of this article is to provide a review of the economic literature on the analysis of the demand for higher education from a microeconomic perspective, where individuals make rationaland farsighted decision on the resources devoted to their education. Among the fundamental theories of this review, we can highlight the human capital theory and its critics like the consumer model, the signage and the social approach. It is important to note that the economic literature about the demand for education is much more numerous in developed countries than in developing countries, mainly because the theoretical and empirical developments have been generated in the United States and in Europe. Nevertheless, the literature in developing countries is growing. en-US
