| dc.description | The uprisings witnessed by many Arab countries since 2011, faced geopolitical actions by regional and world powers. Regional actors have come to clash in the Middle East in ways reminiscent of the Arab Cold War that lasted from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. The differences, however, are noticeable, including, for instance, the emergence of non-state actors that do not fall into the logic of poles, intrinsic to any cold war. The current divisions display two conservative spheres, one under the hegemony of the Saudi monarchy – which faces an internal rivalry with Qatar – and the other led by the Iranian rulers, without being, however, a simple binary contradiction between Sunnis and Shiites. This text explores the genesis and character of what we have called the “New Middle East Cold War,” and the ways in which these Cold Warriors—conservative in both sides—have dealt with the Arab uprisings. | en-US |
| dc.description | Medio Oriente ha sido escenario de fuertes convulsiones desde los levantamientos populares de 2011. Los enfrentamientos entre dos ámbitos de actores regionales con conexiones internacionales y su influencia en los conflictos existentes mantiene similitudes con la guerra fría árabe terminada alrededor de 1971. Sin embargo, también tiene grandes diferencias, como la aparición de nuevos actores no estatales que escapan a la lógica de los polos, intrínseca a cualquier guerra fría. La situación actual exhibe dos ámbitos conservadores, uno liderado por la monarquía saudí, que incluye la rivalidad de esta con la qatarí, y otro por los gobernantes iraníes. Esto, sin embargo, no debe confundirse con una oposición binaria entre sunníes y shiíes. En el texto se explora la génesis y el carácter de lo que podríamos llamar “la nueva guerra fría del Medio Oriente”, particularmente en el contexto de las diversas revueltas populares en los países árabes y las reacciones conservadoras más importantes. | es-ES |
