Descripción :	: Este texto es una aproximación a la obra Ensayo político sobre la Isla de Cuba, del alemán Alexander von Humboldt. El objetivo es analizar cómo se refleja en ella la realidad económica y social del país a inicios del siglo xix. Los procedimientos básicos empleados son el análisis de las fuentes bibliográficas y documentales, así como su fichaje para sintetizar las ideas rectoras de la obra. Humboldt, a partir de su estudio como sujeto participante y observador de la realidad insular, principalmente de la sociedad habanera, logró realizar la primera historia total de Cuba. También resumió las transformaciones producidas por el desarrollo de la plantación esclavista y criticó con sus postulados abolicionistas las contradicciones generadas por la práctica colonial y esclavista.     This paper is an approach to Alexander von Humboldt’s work Ensayo Político sobre la Isla de Cuba. Its goal is to analyze how the economic and social reality of Cuba at the beginning of the xix century is reflected on the travel’s literature. The basic procedures employed are the analysis of the bibliographic and documentary sources, as well as the synthesis of the main ideas of this work. Humboldt, through its study as a participant and observant of Cuban reality’s subject, mainly of Havana’s society, succeeded to write the first total history of Cuba. Given his abolitionist point of view, he also summarized the transformations caused by the development of the slave plantation and criticized the contradictions that resulted of the colonial and slave‘s exploitation practices.
