Descripción :	Esta investigación se interroga sobre la transformación histórica del paisaje; los factores direccionadores de los cambios en el metabolismo socioecológico y la capacidad del valle geográfico del río Cauca, particularmente el municipio de Palmira como epicentro de la producción cañera en Colombia, de resistir el modelo de desarrollo agrícola implantado en los últimos 150 años con el protagonismo de la caña de azúcar. El valle geográfico del río Cauca ha sufrido dos transiciones socioecologicas evidentes en los últimos 500 años: la primera en el siglo XVI con la llegada de los españoles y la segunda (transición de una agricultura de base energética orgánica a una industrial) a finales del siglo XIX, acrecentada a mediados del siglo XX. El valle geográfico inició un proceso de ampliación de la frontera agrícola asociado a factores direccionadores subyacentes, demográficos, políticos, económicos, tecnológicos y sociales a escala internacional, nacional y local, que luego de la séptima década del siglo XX se profundizó con los incrementos en la productividad mediante la incorporación de tecnologías y altos consumos de energía fósil, lo que ocasionó una completa reconfiguración del paisaje, los procesos agroecológicos y las relaciones laborales. This research seeks to understand the historical transformation of the landscape and the driving forces of the socio-ecological metabolism and the capacity of the Cauca river valley, specially the municipality of Palmira - epicenter of the sugarcane production in Colombia - to withstand the agricultural development model imposed over the past 150 years, with a central role of sugar cane. The Cauca river valley has suffered two clear socio-ecological transitions over the last 500 years: the first in the XVI century with the arrival of the Spanish and the second (transition from an agricultural system with an organic energy base to an industrial one) at the end of the XIX century, increased in the middle of the XX century. The geographic valley initiated a process of increasing the agricultural frontier, associated with several driving forces: demographic, political, economic, technological and social, at the international, national and local levels deepened after the seventh decade of the XX century with the increasing productivity given by the incorporation of technologies and high fossil fuel use, leading to a complete alteration of the landscape, the agro-ecological processes and labor relations. The land use changes starting in this period and its effects on the agricultural, biological and genetic diversity, the morphology of the landscape and the morphodynamic characteristics of some effluents, offer clear evidence of the high velocity and intensity of the rhythm and magnitude of the process of appropriation of mature. Also, the effects on the biophysical base reflected in the alteration of the flows of water and nutrients demonstrate the loss of the quality and fertility of the soils, as with the severe hydrological cycle, as such they indicate the mistaken intervention of the State actors, the market and society in the socio-ecological system.
