Descripción :	El territorio suramericano guarda su historia prehispánica en un misterio muy parecido al olvido. Aún con el arribo de la escritura en la conquista, la historia del continente americano yace dormida, suplantada usualmente por la historia de occidente, como si fuera ese antecedente y no el propio, el que ayudara a completar los trazos que le faltan a la trama. Es de resaltar que Colombia presenta un alto grado de desconocimiento acerca de las culturas que predominaron antes y durante la conquista; estas culturas en general se dividieron en dos posiciones: algunas se mezclaron con una facilidad relativa al sistema impuesto por los nuevos amos, mientras que otras dieron su radical oposición, y aunque las situaciones parecen diferentes, ambas tuvieron el mismo triste desenlace: la extinción1. Fue la cultura Yariguíe en los territorios ahora santandereanos, la que se opuso siempre a la conquista. Se les reconoció un carácter decidido y una intensa defensa de la libertad. Acerca de estos nativos de estirpe caribe pareciera haber quedado poco para el futuro, de no ser por la obra de Fray Pedro Simón que dejó por escrito lo que hubo de ellos, talvez no habría a donde mirar cuando quisiera mirarse atrás.
