dc.descriptionThis paper discusses the use of the grammatical category of person within a specific discursive genre – ceremonial speech. This kind of discourse occurs during traditional offering rituals, which form part of the common Mayan culture. The focus of this study is on the Poqomchi’ Maya tradition. There are three major categories of participants in the ritual: spiritual guides, attendees and supernatural beings to whom the invocations are addressed. A linguistic analysis of the word forms that bear person marking and their referents in ceremonial discourse elucidates the specific relations between participants and provides insight into the internal structure of the ritual act.en-US
dc.descriptionEste artículo analiza el uso de la categoría gramatical de persona dentro de un género discursivo específico: el discurso ceremonial. Este tipo de discurso se produce durante los rituales tradicionales de ofrenda que forman parte de la cultura maya. Este estudio se centra en la tradición maya poqomchi’. Hay tres categorías principales de participantes en el ritual: guías espirituales, asistentes y seres sobrenaturales a los que se dirigen las invocaciones. El análisis lingüístico de las formas verbales que llevan la marca de persona y de sus referentes en el discurso ceremonial aclara las relaciones específicas entre los participantes y permite comprender la estructura interna del acto ritual.es-ES
