dc.descriptionThe Quechua word tinkuy (from the root tinku- of the verb ‘to meet’ and the noun ‘meeting’) is used by the Ministry of Education of Peru in order to promote festive meetings among school children of different cultures. During these meetings children can talk to each other about their experiences. The public institution aims to contribute to the children’s cognitive development in their intercultural competence in a culturally heterogenous society and, consequently, to overcome social and cultural exclusion. What does tinkuy mean for Quechua speakers? This paper offers an analysis of the root tinku- in different dictionaries of the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries. ‘Meeting’ is a general translation. But tinkuy is used in many different contexts. This point underlines the importance of using dictionaries as an ethnographic source in the studies of language and culture of the Andean region. The specific uses of tinku- will help us to understand terms and ideas about how Quechua people use tinkuy nowadays in their ritual, public and everyday life.en-US
dc.descriptionLa voz quechua tinkuy (de la raíz tinku- para la formación del verbo ‘encontrar’ y del nominal ‘encuentro’) es aplicada en Perú en el espacio público de educación para la promoción de encuentros e intercambios festivos entre niños y niñas procedentes de diferentes culturas. Es una medida oficial al desarrollo de competencias interculturales en su desarrollo cognitivo en una sociedad culturalmente heterogénea y, de esta manera, contribuye a la superación de la exclusión social y cultural. ¿Qué significa tinkuy para los quechuahablantes? En este trabajo se revisa la raíz tinku- en distintos vocabularios de los siglos XVI, XVII y XIX. ‘Encuentro’ es una acepción general. Su contextualización presenta un complejo universo relacionado con lo diferente y subraya la importancia de vocabularios como material etnográfico en la investigación de la lengua y cultura quechua. Las situaciones específicas en las que aparece tinku- sugieren la necesidad de profundizar conceptos y vocablos en su aplicación moderna a partir de los diversos usos y costumbres de sus actores sociales quechuas actuales en su vida cotidiana, ritual y pública.es-ES
