Descripción :	This article concerns a little explored group in the northern Peruvian Amazon called the Chayahuita or Shawi, and their conception and management of their relationships with the tanan huayan, dangerous non-humans who have retained the original condition they once shared with the Shawi. I explore a series of narratives about the most intimate places of Shawi territory, many of which address profound transformations suffered by their ancestors in mythical times. Considering that one of the most important changes that occurred to the Shawi in the past is their transit from a proto-human state to their current humanity, I suggest that these changes concern not only their history, but also the conception Shawi have of themselves (as piyapi, person) and of their relationships with those threatening non-humans that stayed in their original form and that populate the forest nowadays. Los chayahuita o shawi de la alta Amazonía peruana conforman su propia historia a través de la narración de sucesos míticos acaecidos en el entorno más íntimo de su territorio. Se trata de una narración cuya lectura se encuentra, en ocasiones, al ras de los hechos históricos vividos en la Provincia de Maynas a partir del siglo XVI (recogidos por los misioneros y los conquistadores españoles), y que tiene como objetivo, básicamente, dar cuenta de los grandes cambios sufridos por sus antepasados desde tiempos inmemorables. Estos grandes cambios son los que han marcado la trayectoria histórica shawi, pero también y sobre todo la propia concepción de sí mismos. El texto que proponemos se hace eco de una de estas grandes transformaciones del pasado shawi, la conversión de ‘animales y gentes’. Es aquí donde comienza la propia definición del shawi como ‘persona’ (piyapi). Y también, su necesaria relación con aquellos que permanecieron en su antiguo ser de ‘gentes’, los seres del monte (tanan huayan).
