| Descripción : | Being an exception during Colonial times, war alliances between the Chiriguano and the Toba of Pilcomayo River became common during the second half of the 19th century in order to deal with the pressing colonization. For the Chiriguano that fled this Colonial offensive, the Gran Chaco became a refuge. These alliances did not survive their final defeat in 1874. Though they failed to go beyond traditional antagonism between both ethnic groups, they induced the rise of a Guaraní-Chaco Indian army which was the source of the Toba messianic movements of the early 20th century. Excepciones en la época colonial, las alianzas guerreras entre chiriguanos y tobas del Pilcomayo se vuelven la regla en la segunda mitad del siglo xix para enfrentar la colonización cada vez apremiante. El Gran Chaco se vuelve en particular un refugio para los chiriguanos que huyen de la colonización. Aunque no logren superar el antagonismo tradicional entre ambos grupos y no sobrevivan a la derrota de 1874, estas alianzas propiciaron el surgimiento de un verdadero ejército guaraní-chaqueño, y fueron el crisol donde se gestó el mesianismo toba de inicios del siglo XX. |
