dc.descriptionThe present research analyzes from a political point of view the role played by the public opinion that was raised at the local, regional and national press, during the process of creating the national intendance of San Andres and Providencia from 1912 through 1915. The public confrontation arising between Cartagena’s conservative elite and the emerging political class of the archipelago is then presented, with the first ones supporting the maintenance of the current conditions that had permitted them to keep the political and administrative control of the islands, and the second ones claiming the creation of a new legislation leading to a more autonomous frame so they could be able to manage the affairs of the archipelago by themselves. This confrontation was staged at the press, with the islanders focused in developing a public opinion thatguaranteed the permeation of the inner circles of central government in such a way that they finally could get its favor above the interests of Cartagena. Finally,  the paper registers the way in which they achieved the new political and administrative condition as a national intendance linking them directly to the central government  instead of the regional Bolivar department to which they were previously attached.en-US
dc.descriptionEl presente artículo analiza, desde una perspectiva política, el papel que jugó la opinión pública que fue forjada a través de la prensa nacional, regional y local durante el proceso de creación de la intendencia nacional de San Andrés y Providencia, entre los años 1912 a 1915. Se destaca el debate público que se generó entre la clase hegemónica cartagenera, que se negaba a terminar con el dominio político y administrativo que ella ejercía sobre el territorio insular del Caribe colombiano, y la emergente clase política de las islas de San Andrés y Providencia, defensora de la creación de un nuevo ordenamiento que les permitiera tener un marco legal más autónomo para que ellos mismos pudieran manejar los asuntos internos del archipiélago. Esta confrontación se desarrolló a través de la prensa, y en ella los isleños se preocuparon de generar una opinión pública que permitiera permear los círculos más íntimos del gobierno central, hasta el punto de obtener el reconocimiento favorable del gobierno, por encima de los intereses de Cartagena. Finalmente se registra cómo alcanzaron esa nueva condición política y administrativa de intendencia nacional que los ligaba directamente al gobierno central, en lugar de al departamento de Bolívar al cual estaban previamente vinculadoses-ES
