This paper first compares the theory of competition in Marx with the theories of perfect competition, imperfect competition, monopoly and markups, identifying the implicit or explicit theory of competition upon which they are based. The methodology used to calculate prices of production, rates of profit and markups with the US Input-Output database is then presented. The most salient results from the empirical analysis are: (1) almost two thirds of the rates of profit crossed over the average rate of profit during the period studied (1958-1977), (2) the rates of profit and markups showed no clear relationship with concentration and (3) the rates of profit and markups exhibited a negative correlation with capital-output ratios. The final section assesses the implications of the results for theories of competition, monopoly and markups.en-US
